Reiki Level 1
Reiki is an energy-based healing practice founded by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. The word “Reiki” consists of two parts: “Rei,” referring to the universal, spiritual, or sacred aspect, and “Ki,” meaning life energy. Reiki is based on the use of universal energy to promote the flow, balance, and restoration of energy within the human body.
Reiki is an energy-based healing practice founded by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. The word “Reiki” consists of two parts: “Rei,” referring to the universal, spiritual, or sacred dimension, and “Ki,” meaning life energy. Reiki is traditionally described as working with universal energy to promote balance and restore the flow of energy within the human body.
Unlike many modern medical approaches that primarily focus on treating symptoms, Reiki emphasizes holistic balance of the body, mind, and spirit. In Reiki practice, the practitioner serves as a channel through which universal energy is traditionally believed to flow to the recipient, supporting the body's natural capacity for self-healing.
Reiki Level 1 – The Beginning of Your Energy Healing Journey
Reiki Level 1, also known as Shoden, meaning “First Teaching,” is the foundational level of Reiki training. At this level, students are introduced to the concept of universal energy and learn how to perceive, receive, and practice Reiki for themselves and others.
At this level, students receive an “Attunement” from a Reiki Master, a traditional initiation process intended to prepare the practitioner for Reiki practice. Beginners do not need any special abilities to study Reiki Level 1; openness, willingness to learn, and regular practice are the essential starting points.
Who Should Take Reiki Level 1?
Reiki Level 1 is suitable for anyone interested in learning the practice, especially those who:
- Want to explore and practice a natural, non-pharmacological approach to relaxation and well-being.
- Work in healthcare, wellness, spa, massage, or therapeutic services.
- Want to develop personal practices for managing stress, tension, sleep difficulties, or anxiety.
- Are parents, teachers, or caregivers interested in promoting a positive and supportive environment for their families or students.
- Are interested in spirituality, meditation, mindfulness, and personal inner development.
Program Curriculum
The “Reiki Level 1 – Opening the Path to Healing Energy” course at the Academy of Medical Sciences is an introductory step into the practice of Reiki, a traditional energy-based practice focused on balance of the body, mind, and spirit. At this level, students are introduced to Reiki through an Attunement ceremony, learn traditional approaches to connecting with universal energy, and practice using the hands as a channel for self-practice and supporting others.
The program combines an introduction to concepts of bioenergy, Reiki philosophy, meditation, and experiential energy-awareness practices. This approach is designed to help students understand the traditional principles of Reiki while developing practical skills and a deeper appreciation of its philosophical and spiritual dimensions.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Practice Reiki as a daily personal wellness and relaxation practice.
- Practice traditional Reiki techniques with other willing participants, animals, or plants.
- Understand and apply the Five Reiki Principles in everyday life.
- Prepare for the next stage – Reiki Level 2, which introduces additional Reiki practices and traditional distance-practice techniques.
This introductory module provides students with a foundation in Reiki, a traditional energy-based practice associated with Mikao Usui in Japan. Students are introduced to the concepts of “Rei” (universal energy) and “Ki” (life energy), traditional explanations of how these concepts relate to the human body, and their relationship to physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The instructor also introduces perspectives on bioenergy, the aura, and the chakra system, helping students understand traditional Reiki concepts and their relationship to holistic well-being.
- Lesson 1: The history and origins of Reiki – from Japan to the West
- Lesson 2: The concept of life energy and traditional Reiki principles
- Lesson 3: The chakra system and traditional concepts of energy flow in the body
- Lesson 4: Introduction to the energy field and developing awareness of surrounding sensations
This module introduces the philosophical foundation of Reiki through the Five Reiki Principles traditionally associated with Mikao Usui. They provide a framework for mindful living, compassion, and cultivating a positive outlook. Students are guided through meditation practices based on each principle, incorporating breathing and mindfulness techniques to encourage calmness, stress management, and emotional awareness. The instructor explores the relationship between psychological well-being and traditional energy concepts, emphasizing that personal well-being begins with awareness and self-care.
- Lesson 1: The Five Reiki Principles – meaning and everyday application
- Lesson 2: Morning Reiki meditation – cleansing and centering practices
- Lesson 3: Emotions and energy – recognizing and transforming emotional states
- Lesson 4: Reiki as a mindful and compassionate way of living
This module introduces the traditional Attunement or Reiju process, in which students participate in a Reiki initiation conducted by a Reiki Master. Following the traditional ceremony, students begin practicing Reiki as a channel for the practice of energy work for themselves and others. The instructor guides students in developing awareness of sensations in the hands and body, such as warmth, tingling, or subtle changes in sensation during practice. This module encourages students to approach Reiki practice with calmness, compassion, and mindfulness rather than attempting to force or control the experience.
- Lesson 1: Meaning and preparation for the Attunement process
- Lesson 2: Participating in an Attunement with a Reiki Master
- Lesson 3: Developing awareness of Reiki-related sensations in the hands
- Lesson 4: Reiki meditation and guidance for practice following Attunement
In this module, students begin learning foundational Reiki Level 1 techniques, including hand positions, energy scanning, and traditional chakra-balancing practices. The instructor demonstrates the traditional 21 hand positions used in Reiki practice, covering areas from the head and neck through the shoulders, chest, abdomen, back, and legs, together with breathing and attention techniques. Students practice developing awareness of bodily sensations, identifying areas of focus, and maintaining a calm and attentive state during Reiki sessions.
- Lesson 1: Proper posture and the basic Reiki practice sequence
- Lesson 2: Hand positions and recommended practice duration
- Lesson 3: Energy-scanning techniques and traditional aura-cleansing practices
- Lesson 4: Traditional chakra-balancing practices using Reiki
The final module integrates the skills learned throughout the course and introduces ways to incorporate Reiki into daily life. The instructor guides students through a personal Reiki practice (self-practice), including a structured daily routine designed to support relaxation, mindfulness, and personal well-being. Students then learn traditional approaches to practicing Reiki with another consenting person, including creating a comfortable environment, appropriate positioning, observing feedback, and concluding a session appropriately. Upon completion of the course, students receive a Reiki Level 1 Certificate and may continue to Reiki Level 2, which introduces additional traditional Reiki practices, including distance practice.
- Lesson 1: Daily self-practice with Reiki
- Lesson 2: Practicing Reiki with others – traditional principles and ethics
- Lesson 3: Observing feedback and responding to changes in sensation during practice
- Lesson 4: Personal boundaries and properly concluding a Reiki session
Do You Need Special Abilities to Study Reiki Level 1?
A common question from beginners is: “Can I learn Reiki if I do not have psychic abilities or a sixth sense?” The answer is yes. Reiki does not require supernatural abilities. Traditional Reiki training is designed to be accessible to beginners, with openness, willingness to learn, and regular practice serving as the foundation for developing familiarity with the practice.
Potential Benefits of Learning Reiki Level 1
1. Physical Well-Being
Some students report improved sleep, reduced muscle tension, and a greater sense of well-being after incorporating Reiki into their daily routines. These experiences are individual and should not be interpreted as evidence that Reiki treats or cures medical conditions.
2. Calmness and Stress Management
Reiki practice may provide a calming and relaxing experience. Reiki meditation can be used as a complementary mindfulness practice to support relaxation and emotional well-being.
3. Supporting Loved Ones
Reiki Level 1 introduces traditional practices that can be shared with family members, friends, or pets with appropriate consent and care. It can complement, but should not replace, appropriate medical or veterinary care.
4. Beginning a Personal Practice Journey
Some students continue from Reiki Level 1 to Level 2, Level 3, and Reiki Master training as part of a personal or professional complementary-practice journey, subject to applicable laws, professional standards, and scope-of-practice requirements.
Reiki – A Practice Without Borders
One distinctive feature of Reiki is that it can be practiced by people from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds. Reiki has developed communities of practitioners in Japan, the United States, Europe, and many other regions. Its use as a complementary wellness practice should be distinguished from evidence-based medical treatment, and claims of medical effectiveness should be evaluated according to scientific evidence.
Reiki Level 1 – Discovering a Personal Path to Well-Being
Reiki Level 1 goes beyond learning a set of traditional techniques. For many practitioners, it is also an opportunity to cultivate compassion, gratitude, mindfulness, and greater awareness of personal well-being. Through regular practice, students may develop a more intentional and reflective approach to their own health and daily life.
Reiki Level 1 Certificate – A Foundation for Further Study
After completing the course requirements, students receive a Reiki Level 1 Certificate. This certificate documents completion of the Academy of Medical Sciences' Reiki Level 1 training and provides a foundation for those who wish to continue with Level 2, Level 3, or Reiki Master training, according to the progression requirements of the relevant Reiki tradition.
What Is a Typical Reiki Level 1 Class Like?
Reiki Level 1 classes are typically conducted in small groups to encourage interaction and individualized guidance. During the course, students receive theoretical instruction from a Reiki Master, participate in practical exercises, experience the traditional Attunement process, exchange observations, and practice meditation. Classes are generally designed to provide a supportive, respectful, and positive learning environment.
Important Considerations When Studying Reiki Level 1
- Practice consistently: Regular practice is central to developing familiarity and confidence with Reiki techniques.
- Do not use Reiki as a substitute for medical care: Reiki should be considered a complementary wellness practice and should not replace medication, diagnosis, or evidence-based medical treatment.
- Follow ethical principles: Practice with respect, informed consent, appropriate boundaries, compassion, and a commitment to the well-being of others.
- Take care of your own well-being: Maintain healthy lifestyle habits and seek qualified healthcare when medical attention is needed.
Reiki Level 1 – When Your Hands Become a Gateway to Practice
Reiki Level 1 is more than a skills course for many practitioners; it can also be an opportunity to explore a more mindful way of living, with greater awareness, compassion, and self-reflection. Through Reiki practice, students are encouraged to cultivate calmness and a sense of connection with themselves and others.
If you are looking for a complementary wellness practice focused on relaxation, mindfulness, and personal development, Reiki Level 1 can be a meaningful place to begin. Reiki should be practiced responsibly and should never replace appropriate medical diagnosis or treatment.
